“There is no doubt that at this early stage of modern science the greatest conviction was borne by the newly discovered laws of mathematics. These mathematics laws were the visible expression of the divine will—this we read in Kepler—and Kepler goes into raptures at the fact that he was the first to recognize the beauty of the divine works. The new thinking, therefore, has nothing whatsoever to do with a rejection of religion. Even if the new findings did run counter to ecclesiastical dogma in some places, this was of little significance if one was able to experience the workings of God in nature so directly.”

In 1960, the physicist and Nobel laureate Eugene Wigner published a paper with the title
THE UNREASONABLE EFFECTIVENESS
OF MATHEMATICS IN THE NATURAL SCIENCES.
There, he stated:
“The miracle of the appropriateness
of the language of mathematics
for the formulation of the laws of physics
is a wonderful gift
which we neither understand nor deserve.”
I am working on a series of videos illustrating this with the work of different scientists who believed that this is a gift from God. The first episode is about James Clerk Maxwell. More videos will follow.
